Merry Christmas from Netbusters!

Where has the time gone! With 2016 already in sight, we thought we’d take this opportunity to look back on the past year here at Netbusters and send out our annual awards.

We’re all looking forward to Christmas in a few days and it’s safe to say that we’re all in the festive spirit after our charity Christmas tournament a few weeks ago! Not only did we see some fabulous netball performances, but the delicious cake sale, exciting killer competition and Christmas-themed fancy dress made the day even better. Big thanks to the 8 teams who took part and to our Netbusters umpires who helped to make the day a great success. Father Christmas gave these lovely elves a day off to come along to our tournament…

Congratulations to Grigers (a combination of the superstar Tigers & Granny Pants players from Clapham Junction) who finished as the overall tournament winners and headed home undefeated with big smiles on their faces! Meanwhile in the plate tournament, Thundercats just pipped The Ho Ho Hoes to take home the trophy in a thrilling final. Check out the photos of our festive winners below.

An extra special shout out goes to Maxine from Balham Babes who won the overall Player of the Tournament, and also to Georgie from Grigers who showed off her shooting skills to win the coveted Christmas Toblerone bar in our killer competition.

It really was a great day, and we’re pleased to announce that we raised nearly £500 for a very worthwhile charity. We’d like to thank you all for getting in to the festive spirit and supporting Shooting Star Chase, your contributions to the charity will go far this Christmas!

So now it’s time to reveal our netball stars of 2015. If you see your team, or better still your name, featured in one of our award tables then you definitely deserve an extra-large glass of prosecco on Christmas Day! Congratulations to all of the following award winners, drum roll…

The Netbusters Award for this year’s most outstanding players

In order to shortlist our most outstanding players across all of our Netbusters leagues, we have totted up the POM votes from the past year. Very well done to Lucy Ryan from Amazeballs who has finished in a very well-deserved 1st place with a grand total of 12 POMs in 2015!

We’d like to give a special shout out to Granny Pants who have averaged 36 goals per game in our Clapham Junction league and scored a total of 1190 this year – wow! The defence, mid-court and shooters are all obviously do their jobs very well! We do actually have some further proof for that…this show-stopping team took home their 14th Netbusters title earlier this month, now that is certainly worth a mention!

The Netbusters Award for 2015’s top form teams

Quite frankly, this award goes to the teams who are the best at winning on a very regular basis! The Swans in our Brixton Monday league are getting pretty well practiced at it…

The Swans 16 (all wins)
Victorious Secrets 15 (all wins)
TBC Ballers 7 (all wins)
Astroids 6 (all wins)
The Warren Street Wolves 6 (all wins)

Well done to all of the winning teams and players, keep up the good work next year! There’s lots to look forward to in 2016 and, with the new rules coming into play, it’ll be an interesting year for the netball world! Thanks to everyone who has played in our leagues this year, we hope to see many of you returning to our courts in the New Year. We’re also excited to welcome many new faces to our brand new leagues in Shoreditch, Waterloo and Battersea. As always, we’d like to thank our dedicated umpires for all of their hard work all the year round. Now all that’s left to do is wish you all a very Merry Christmas and all the netballing success you could wish for in 2016!

Brixton Tournament Success

Netbusters & Charity Tournament in aid of The Brixton Soup Kitchen

We had big plans for our charity netball and football tournament, and it certainly didn’t disappoint! Having chosen The Brixton Soup Kitchen as our charity, we set about planning the event and thinking of all the possible ways we could raise plenty of pounds for this very worthwhile cause.

So first of all let us tell you a little bit about our chosen charity. The Brixton Soup Kitchen is a local initiative, founded and set up by Solomon Smith (pictured below with our tournament winners) with the goal of helping the homeless throughout Greater London. Not only do they serve food and give out clothing, but they also offer job and housing advice to help people to get back onto their feet. You can find out more about the charity here.

With a full house of 20 football teams and 10 netball teams on the day, it was guaranteed to be a great day of sport, fundraising and of course plenty of cake – and even the British weather was kind to us. We had plenty going on throughout the day, from a netball shooting showdown, football crossbar challenge, cake sale and a raffle, that’s not to mention 200 people playing netball and football! A special shout-out to the winner of the crossbar challenge – not only did he hit the bar once, but he managed it twice in a row – some people will never do that in a lifetime!

We would like to thank all the local businesses who supported our tournament and donated some fantastic prizes to our raffle. Restaurant vouchers, netball trainers, a £100 bar tab – we had it all up for grabs! Big thanks go to The Windmill, Picturehouse, Strada, Rush Hair, Brixton Brewery, Three Cheers Pub Co., Vodka Revs, Haché Burgers, Nando’s, Rococco Chocolates, WorkSpace, Floppy Toast and Sport Photo Gallery for their generosity.

In support of Brixton Soup Kitchen we also decided to set up a food bank trolley, encouraging all of our players to bring along an item of pre-packaged or tinned food. If we’d have known how generous everyone was going to be, we would have borrowed two trolleys from Tesco! We’d like to give a special thanks to everyone who donated – your contributions have made a big difference to the lives of many homeless people in our local area.

Another special mention goes to Diane from Bake You Smile who baked us so many to-die-for cakes! These weren’t just any cakes though, these were 5-a-side branded and decorated cupcakes! Check out Diane’s tasty treats below.

All that’s left to do is congratulate our winning teams – Netball’s Deep (netball winners) and Danish Bacon (football winners) both overcame plenty of tough competition to be crowned our 2015 tournament champions! Both teams are pictured below with their fabulous new team kits, kindly donated by Logopress and Fivas. Thanks so much to all those who supported our charity tournament and helped us raise a huge total of £1017.23 for The Brixton Soup Kitchen! It was a great success and we hope you’ll all be putting the tournament in your diaries again for next year.

Netbusters Christmas Awards

As 2014 draws to a close and with Christmas festivities in full swing, Netbusters would like to take a look back at the past year and present to you our unofficial 2014 awards. If you see your team, or better still your name, featured in one of our award tables then make sure you treat yourself to an extra slice of chocolate log this Christmas! Another glass of mulled wine by Netbusters’ orders too! In order to shortlist our most outstanding players across all of our Netbusters leagues, we have totted up the P.O.M votes given to us each week by our umpires. A special mention to A Glass of Wine from our Brixton Tuesday league who are taking all the glory in this category with two players taking 8 POMs each! Lots of other teams are well represented in second place with another fantastic total of 6 POMs each.
